How would one decide if this is real? Color looks to be about right, I guess. Design seems to be right. Legend fits with the catalog number. They all seem to be imperf and I haven't found a size to go by. I would have taken the hinge(s) off but there looks to be a tear on the right side and they may be holding it stable.

Suggestions or opinions are appreciated.

Larry Lyons "The Identifier for Carriers, Locals, Fakes, Forgeries and Bogus Posts of the United States" lists your copy as a forgery in vol II, page 588.

John Becker - Thank you. I will see if I can find that book and particular page. It would be especially useful since there are a bunch of other to research like Jordan's Penny Post, Pacific Express, Empire City, Hussey's and such. Thank you for taking the time to post.

John Becker - Are you sure that the page number was 588? Which edition was that, if you wouldn't mind checking. Seems that the pages in Vol. II only has 496 pages in the 1998, though perhaps in the 3 vols. one picks up numbering where the last left off.

John Becker - Thank you. I see they have a copy at the Los Angeles Public Library so I will see about getting down there this week. The 3 volumes would never get the use needed to justify the purchase. Thank you for your help.

John Becker - Actually, the give-away for me is on page 587 - the apostrophe is backwards in the Forgery B, type VI. I don't see mentioned in the write-up.

Between those 2 pages, that says it all for this item. I agree, it is unusual the apostrophe is not mentioned in the list of distinguishing features. Anyway, those 3 vols should answer all your questions on locals/carriers.

Also, you may have missed it, but there is a 2007 pricing guide to accompany the 3 volumes which lists your Honour's at $12, so forgeries are quite collectible in this case.

I appreciate your point to the books.. I've got a bunch more to go through and the LO3 looks like it show green with UV, but I have to follow up on that one - a lot of description and not much in the way of example to compare or make a judgement call. Gee, another project. >;>
