Well, there is one on Worthpoint and there is a 'Pacific' that may be associated with the Co. although the logo is quite different, but nothing in Lyons' book(s) or anything definite online. Anybody have any info or suggestions, please.

revcollector - Thank you. Not familiar with that/those catalogs, yet, but I'll see about picking one up. |

Not in Springer, I just checked.
This is in Bruce H Mosher's Catalog of Private Express Labels and Stamps. On page 124 as PACX-S1. |

Volumes 8 and 10 have express labels, but I did not see this specific design listed. |

John Becker - Thank you. It does look like the L.A. Central Library and I are going to become great friends. Doesn't hurt my feelings, though. Beautiful place and a fantastic selection of books. |

Ah, well, may have to break down and buy one. Seems the closest copy listed on WorldCat is in Dallas - and gas would cost more than $40.00. |

The Sherwood Springer catalogs were pioneering at their time and useful know about, but many of the sections of taxpaids and cinderellas have been expanded by others in more recent years. From Mosher: |

And many have not. They are still the books to go to for all the various tobacco revenues, several alcohol varieties, plus a number of other areas. They are still essential catalogs in many areas. |

revcollector - Then I will definitely have to pick them up. One of the 3 US volumes has the revenue stamps - a little of everything: oleomargarine (1915), narcotics, tobacco, retail liquor dealer (1882), stocks and such. |

Oleomargarine: see Carter Litchfield's History of Oleomargarine Tax Stamps and Licenses in the United States
Retail liquor dealer: sounds like you have one of the large special tax stamps, see Terence Hines' Special Tax Stamps of the United States, which has oleomargarine info too. |

John Becker - I had mentioned that I had an open bookshelf and the response I got was that I could start loading it up with stamp books. I understand why. That's how it started out with the other collections. It appears that it is ordained to be repeated yet again. However, I have learned to appreciate good reference material. Thank you, again. |

Many years ago I heard that every true collector/scholar has a library that takes up as much space as the actual collection. I agree with this observation. There is nothing more valuable than information - or knowing where to find it quickly. It often takes a while for collectors to realize the Scott US Specialized catalog is just the beginning and there is so much more knowledge at the next level - in the specialized journals and monographs - and collectors in a forum like this. You are lucky to have a philatelic library nearby to look up that unusual item without having to buy every book. |

When I started getting serious about Japanese potteries, I discovered a book by a gentleman named Morse. I still get a chuckle out of it, even after 40 years - when he is talking about a potter and references him as a 'little known artist'. Well, nowadays, that is referencing nearly 140 years ago - the book was printed in 1881 - and the artists name has become a household word and even begun to pass on by now. However, no reference like that book has ever been put out before or since and I have spare copies of it. I know well what you mean about reference material and I well recognize the quality and quantity of knowledge on this forum. It is with all honesty and sincerity when I say that I appreciate it. |

Terry Hines' Special Tax Stamps of the United States is a scarce book, it runs upwards of $100 when you can find it. Great book. Springer's are not usually in that range (except the 9th volume) but they are not all that cheap either, $30-$40 each. Volumes 6-10 should cover everything. |
