I haven't had much luck trying to tell the difference between soft and hard paper on the bank notes. I tried a few of the suggestions on the thread but they didn't seem to work for me. My UV light is a cheap-o and probably not bright enough. Back lighting didn't seem to work. Obviously I need to obtain some new skills to be able to do this. The flip test actually works the best even though it's not reliable.
I have a block of 154/166/190 ? Not sure what the paper type is, so I guess I have a hard, medium, or soft (NBN,CBN or ABN) paper? Perhaps one of the knowledgeable classic collectors can take a look at it and help me ID it.

That is a soft paper, Scott #190. No question about it.

A simple aid to identifying the paper types is to use as reference examples, stamps that are known to be either hard or soft paper. For the white wove paper you can use a #135 or #157 and for soft paper, a #207 is easy enough to come by.

What made you determine it was soft paper? Hopefully I can pick up some tips.

190 soft. The mottled appearance of this paper is evident even without backlighting. The high visibility of the obverse design when viewed from the reverse without backlighting is another giveaway. Note too that this type of NY registry division cancel is late.

Thanks, both the above are very useful. I was wondering about the registry cancel and tried to look up the dates it was used but could never find a reference on the internet.
