Any experiences with trading stamps gone bad? I got an email 3 weeks ago asking for a trade of stamps. After some exchange of information, I sent that guy my pile of stamps in the expectation that the exchange would be simultaneous. After that, I havnt heard from that person ever since and I think he never sent me anything and he never intended to comply with our agreement.
Anyway, I was thinking of posting the email addresses of the people we had some bad experiences trading with so at least the members here in SC would be forewarned. I would just like to know what the members think of this idea?
And if theres an agreement on this, I could post at least 2 email addresses that I have that we could avoid trading with. I know that this scam artists can just change emails but some information is better than no information also. Take care

Johnstamp with trading stamps you sometimes have to kiss a few frogs before Prince Charming comes along....over 30 years I have run in to 2 or 3 what I call "dirty old men" they advertise for a certain country or topic and you send it to them and get back dirty damaged stuff fit only for throwing away..they only get you once...start off slow with any trader and you will soon see where its going...if you get the right "fit" someone at about your level..not too far ahead or too far behind you..it should work out...i have had trading partners that lasted several years and a few that are still going on..most people are fair.. |

I suspect finding a good trading partner is a lot like finding a good wife. It can take a while, and hopefully you don't have to keep trying to get it right.
Phil is right about starting slow. My other advice would be to use a site like this (where there is at least some small level of control). Short of that I guess eHarmony will have to do. |

Johnstamp , I had some sour trades also. I traded with a young woman on a 1 to 1 basis , and she treated my trades as if I were a stamp approvals service , I'd send 50 and if she could only use 40 she would send me the 10 stamps she couldn't use and then 40 more to cover the 40 she took , then to make matters worse she would send me partial sets always keeping the highest value stamp of the set (don't know if this was done on purpose but I suspect she felt they were worth more in the trade even though they were CTO's).
I've also been at fault for some of my sour stamp trades , always contact your trading partner before sending stamps , unsolicited trades are like giving stamps away , there are no obligations of returning stamps if terms are not established and you don't know if they have enough stamps to meet your traded quantity. |

Interesting information, but I don't think anyone answered John's original question about creating a "blacklist" ...

My intention was to prevent the bad things (in trading stamps) that happened to me from happening to SC members. I also decided to ask for the sentiments of members first coz I acknowledge that posting somebody's email might be offensive also. But either way is really fine with me. Take care and happy stamping :) |

Johnstamp, Do not publish a "blacklist" the are possible legal issues you can be entangle with here. Should the persons listed would be so inclined to do so. It would be up to you if you would disseminate it should over a secure service that others can't see. The world not as it once was.

Johnstamp, Sometimes it is also not an immediate trade or their a proscrastinator. There is all sorts of speculation on what could have happened with your trade. I myself, rarely have something of interest to trade from my duplicates with others....unless they want common used US stamps. |

Quote: she would send me partial sets always keeping the highest value stamp of the set (don't know if this was done on purpose but I suspect she felt they were worth more in the trade even though they were CTO's). No, she probably wasn't keeping them but probably didn't have the higher values. A lot of what are called short sets used to be sold on approval and maybe still are. The idea was to make them as inexpensive as possible for beginners, where as the high values might have doubled, tripled, or quadrupled the price, or more. Long definitive sets from British colonies typically sold up the the shilling value to intermediate collectors. Beginners were generally offered the first three, for example the 1/2d, 1d, and 2d. Even for the intermediates, adding the 5/, 10/ and pound values would send the price up many dollars. |

I am in the legal profession and I dont think there is a legal issue but I agree that posting their email addresses will generate some bad blood so I will defer to the suggestion :) |

I would agree with all that's been said but would add that while I have had some less than great trading ventures, I find the overall trading experience one of the highlights of the hobby. |

I am against publicly "blacklisting" anyone...i don't have the stomach to brand anyone like that...that being said...i would certainly feel obligated to warn my friends by e mail if someone known to us was less than honorable in their dealings !! Plus I doubt our forum chiefs would go for anything like a blacklist..just my opinion ! |

Just for the record, it was me that introduced the term "blacklist." It has a negative connotation and isn't exactly what John suggested in his original post. I hope I haven't steered the discussion from its original direction.

One way to look at it is say they get you on one bad trade. Well that person I would not have any future dealings with. And that would be their loss. So they may have made out on some but no telling what they have lost in future trades. Stamp collectors are a close bunch and yes there are some bad eggs sometimes but word spreads very quickly thru other channels about dodgy practices. Personally I can not see why someone would ruin their rep. for so little. |
