A NYTimes article, to which I do not have access, Refered to the Josiah Macy's Sons company as an oil company and possibly a precursor to the Standard Oil company upon further research...

The government instituted many taxes to pay for the civil war and issued revenue stamps to collect many of these taxes. Yours is a revenue stamp that likely was used on an outgoing company check. It was cancelled by the user (Macy) when the check was written. So not a "postmark", but a privately-made cancel used in their office to cancel revenue stamps on financial documents (or often as a convenience, other documents requiring a date-stamp). Macy's outgoing mail would have regular New York City post office cancels on postage stamps.
