this is an example of the 1000's of stamps my mother saved when she worked at the post office. Do any of the marked stamps still retain any value since they were used?

and where do I find a good publication for determining the # for all the varieties?

Yes, some 'marked' stamps can have great value. Unfortunately, figuring out the arcane varieties will probably be impossible for a beginner. The good news: we love pictures here, keep posting, ps: the 4 so far are all common.

In the Scott catalog you'll find several listings of stamps having this design starting with Scott number 554. There are various varieties with different numbers for different perforations and type varieties.

When cataloging many of these issues, you need to pay very close attention to small details, which are explained fairly well in the catalog. There are many stamps that are essentially worthless that sometimes look almost identical to very valuable ones. I only mention this to remind you not to jump to conclusions that you've got a very valuable stamp on your hands, because it's fairly likely you'll find some of those look-alike stamps in that collection. Chances are going to be that it's the cheaper variety, but valuable stamps can certainly still be found in unsuspecting places. People here would be happy to help make that determination if you think you have a find.
