Hi everyone! I just acquired a number of stamps from a very expensive private stamp collection offered for sale by Noblespirit on ebay. Among the stamps I bought was U.S. Scott #67, Jefferson 5¢, buff, issued in 1861. It's used, fine, with no faults. It's a nice stamp! On the reverse side in the lower right corner is a "stamped" name reading:

A. ROIG
BARCELONA

Based on the quality of the stamps that this collector had in his collection, I have no reason to assume that the "signature" is in any manner not legimate, although I understand that such things happen. My question is: assuming the signature to be legitimate, how much, if anything, does the stamped signature add to the value of the stamp? Any thoughts! Thanks!

I doubt the owners stamp on the back adds any value to the stamp. Is the top row of perfs. running a bit down hill from left to right, or does it just look that way on my monitor?

A. ROIG (1881 - 1970) whose name-stamp appears on the back wasn't , as far as I know, the owner of the stamp. He was a well-known stamp "expert from the early to mid 20th century, who I believe had authenticated the stamp for the owner. That is why his name-stamp would appear on the reverse side of the stamp.

Since you bought the stamp at auction, and since the mark was visible in the photos posted on the auction page, you have some idea of what the stamp is worth with the mark in what you paid for it. It looks like one or more others were willing to pay almost as much as you did, so that is a pretty good indication of value.

The mark looks genuine, like this one

Blcjr, what you say is true, but then again, the stamp's CV, without the name-stamp is worth a great deal more than I wound-up paying for it. If there is, in fact, an added value due to the name-stamp, then, for now at least, it's a mystery wrapped in an enigma! Thanks for your imput, Blcjr, I appreciate it.
