This essay is a trial design for the 3c Washington banknote (#184).
Essays were often printed in several different colors.









This last one has a plate scratch through the right 3.

Those are gorgeous. I especially like the third one....not sure what the proper name for that color is....red just doesn't seem adequate!

Thanks everyone! The Scott catalogue lists values for these in italics meaning they are sold too infrequently to get a reliable market price.

I won't put them in the back of the book, though. I mount essays and proofs alongside the related postal issues.

Yes, it could be a crack. I was thinking it was a scratch since cracks often form from extended die use and these die probably had only a few impressions.

There is a plate crack listed in the catalogue which extends through the upper threes.

Those are some beautiful pictures! That really raises my interest in essays. Was this sort of a trial printing?
