I bought this one on ebay a couple years ago. I must have bid on a dozen before I got one at a price I could swallow

Well, the centering isn't perfect, but the color is nice. It's difficult to tell from scans, but it is a bit brighter than some I've seen. I'm not a stickler for "grade" anyway. I don't want fillers or damaged stamps, but I don't obsess over F vs VF.

Beautiful color KirKs thanks for sharing. Tom when you say "nice copy" are you referring to the quality of the stamp, the reason I asked is that "copy" means something else down under . Regards to all Harry |

Harry:
I assume he meant, "nice example" or similar, but you've piqued my curiousity -- what does copy mean down under?

As you said, the centering is not perfect - but its not bad either. I consider it a very worthy addition to any one's collection. |

The F1 was used to pay the fee for registered letters from 1911-1913, although you could use it after that date. Only 1 stamp design was ever issued. It is a similar situation with Scott #FA1 (certified mail stamp).
In both cases, regular postage stamps could also be used to pay the fees, so the Postmaster General decided to discontinue printing the special fee stamps.
These stamps are considered BOB (back of the book) stamps. |

JD:
Oops, KJH got to your question before I did, but his is a great answer.
One think I would add -- something that I find intriguing about stamps -- even though the stamp was discontinued almost a hundred years ago, it is still valid for paying the first ten cents of the registration fee.
Of course, that would be an enormous waste of a valuable stamp -- the 2008 Scott Catalogue value is $70.
