I also bought this about six months ago. You may be seeing it on ebay very soon. It is defective but still desirable to some collectors. Does anybody know what it is?

Pretty much has to be a III or IIIa, but I'm no good with plating ... and plating is the only way to tell if the top line is broken too. |

You know, I wish I'd look that good after 150 years! You can probably clean it up a bit!

Yes, there is a curl in the hair but that is a fairly insignificant aspect of this position. |

Definite double transfer along right side. So a perforated type III pos. 99R2? If so a very rare stamp! (Number (21) in Scott, not 21.) |

Looks like a type III to me (Sc 21) not a IIIa.
I see some double transfer details in the shells and plumes at the right end of the value panel. Also doubling at the shells following the curve at the end of the upper panel. These things suggest this is a type III pos 99R2 (Scott 21). |

Others beat me to it. Sinclair, very cool and beautiful stamp despite its condition. Thanks for sharing it with us. |

IIRC, that isn't the only 99R2 you own or did own is it? I thought you had a #8, 99R2 on cover....or am I not remembering this correctly? Still pretty cool, even though I know how much of a stickler you are re: condition....Ray |

So, yes, this stamp is a #21 from position 99R2, the ultimate Type III position. Indeed, this is not the only 99R2 that I own or have owned. Both were bought on ebay. The other, an on-cover imperf strip of three of 97-98-99R2. The Millersville, PA cover is a really great item but I don't own it anymore. It resides or did reside in the collection of the late Art Launier. I miss the friendship I had with Art. |

Sinclair, quite a nice find! When/if you put it on ebay please update this thread to so note - thanks. I did not realize Art Launier had passed away; sorry to hear that. He was very knowledgeable, especially about the 1851-1861 1c Franklin. |
