Ancezi,

Of all the Scott numbers that could be associated with this stamp design, especially by those not familiar with them, why do you only mention the two special printings as options? Is it because they have the highest catalog values? (by a significant margin I might add.)

It gives the impression that your interest in the stamps is entirely monetary. That is not a good impression to leave.

Let me give you a chance to vindicate yourself. What other Scott numbers could apply to this stamp?

thank you for your response but tell me why are you sure is not one of above number??

I'm confused????

maybe is Picture not good but the Stamp have any characteristics of #170, from Perf. ( 12 ), color ( dull rose ), Paper ( hard white paper ), cut apart by scissors ( right ), size, no gumi, no grill..

I have another 6cents Stamps with soft paper and there is difference as this, from Paper until color, perfs.

@ essayk,

is not the money, I started few months ago with US Stamps and don't have a catalog, only thing I know about stamps is from Internet and that's reason why I ask here.
I got two old albums from my stepfather and wants to know everything about these stamps which I have now.
for US stamps expertise I dont have a money and here in the switzerland are only interested for Swiss Stamps and not for US Stamps.

Sorry to bother you, I will not more.

Thanks

Probability. This design was used to produce hundreds of millions of stamps that are NOT special printings versus only a few dozen special printings.

No used 6c Special Printing has ever been certified.

The Special Printing is distinguished by color shade and paper, and that cannot be done online. When in doubt, you will have to pay the fee and send it in for a cert.

What we can do here, is tell you how likely it is that you have one. But some of that will be known to you when you have studied the stamps a bit. That starts by considering the possibility that the stamp is common.

It is true that the website you mention does not use the Scott numbers, but the page for Special Printings is not the only page for this design:
http://www.stampworld.com/de/stamps...ser=0&page=4

You did not ask about what you saw there. Why not? You should have, because it has some bad information, and does not present the stamps in good order.

We can help, but we need to know where you are starting from. Then we can know what to try to fix and what to ignore.

It will not be a surprise that the best pages are likely to be in English for US stamps. We may be able to help you with that too, if asked about it.

Absolutely! This I am very happy to do!

Stamp Smarter has taken over hosting the 1847usa website. It is an illustrated online catalog that follows the Scott numbering system. Make this your stating place for identifying material:

http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa/index.htm

At this site, here is the page for the Bank Note Issues:
http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847usa...entifier.htm

The "Free Collecting Catalog" you have been using arranges the stamps by date of earliest documented use (which changes) and does not show the logic of the stamp varieties. They make some serious mistakes for the issues of 1873.

At the Stamp Smarter site, The link to the Bank Note Issues arranges the stamps by denomination. Within each group, all the catalog numbers associated with a particular type of design are given and a description of each. Not all types are illustrated however. But this will help you get started with the Scott catalog listings wherever that is needed.

I starting from 0 ( zero )
why I dont ask about another number.. because I see this:

see marked in red,
I found the same on Usphila with the same "cut apart by scissors" see Picture:

I think is quite normal that I ask for this number.

Ancezi,

Straight edges do not all come from scissors.

Usually, stamps that are separated by scissors from a sheet will show some evidence on more than one side. But please remember that common stamps were sometimes cut from their sheets by scissors too.

When you first start to identify, start with the design and look for all of its varieties before you decide what it may be. Assume it is NOT valuable until you can say why you believe it IS.

This is an orderly approach - and Stamp Smarter can help you with that too.

The search topic for information on stamped envelopes and wrappers is "postal stationery." It not something I collect, and so I have little information to share. Although the Scott U.S. Specialized catalog has an extensive section for this, I do not know of anything online that does what that does.

However, in order to simply identify the older material you have, I would recommend that you purchase an older edition of the US Specialized and then use the catalog numbers on ebay to help get pricing information.

There may be others here who can give a better suggestion.
