Hi Guys,
I was just wondering if anyone can provide me with any information/liks on the scott 219 candlestick variety.. other than that on the swedishtiger.. rarely seen.? Some guy on ebay is asking for a crazy price for a double one. It does not have a scott number as far as I can see, apart from the one he is giving. 219v I cant find anything on the internet about the single candlestick version. Are they valuable? Any ideas?

That topic has come up here a couple of times on the list.

A nice example is illustrated here:

and a couple more were discussed here:

The guy offering the double variety on ebay is a golddigger who way over values any efo item he comes close to having. The candle flame variety is a printing flaw (plate wiping) and nothing major from a production standpoint. Brookman discusses it a bit in the third volume of his work on 19th century (available online for free access at the USPCS website). Scott does not list items like that.

The trick is to look for ones you dont have to pay any premium for because nobody realizes what it is, sometimes people who put prices way out of line are really saying " this is part of my personal collection but everything has a price"

So I checked out the links and am guessing that they are not so uncommon after all? Probably not, as I am pretty sure I have one. I still cant find any that have been sold.. I have one with the 'flame' on the left numeral.. Question is, how does one price such a thing?

There are two other "Candle Flame" varieties on ebay with a BIN below $5, which seems fair. I've handled a lot of these breaking up collections, and never got the impression they were rare or even very scarce. Here are closeups of two variations that I have in my collection:

Just picked this up on ebay, for about .01 percent of the 25K asking price for the pair being offered by the Tasmanian devil.

I guess if you are going to collect the candle flame, this is the way to do it (sellers image):
