Members; I was recently informed by a colleague that it is a Type 1a # 500. I do see the shading around the toga button and some red spotting on the rear.I have done some reading about it, but still am a little confused. Someone wrote 499d on the back. I can not find a record of a 499d anywhere. I included front and back photos. Would love to hear from any of you regarding this issue. Thanks Bob

Dear Members, I am the seller of this block. The auction was cancelled. The truth is that I am certainly not a stamp expert. My father and his father were both stamp collectors. I am 60 years old and have been a R.I. real estate broker for 38 years. Things are slow so I wanted to try ebay. This block had 499d written on the back. After the auction ended I received a note from a fellow eBayer stating that it was listed incorrectly. He was detailed in his explanation that it was clearly a type 1a # 500. Quite a difference. I called ebay and with their blessing, they guided me through the process of cancellation.My feedback indicates that I try to go above and beyond what is necessary. In my real estate community I enjoy a reputation of being honest. I was hoping with hard work and honesty I would enjoy that reputation on ebay as well. Respectfully, Bob |

Hello and welcome to the forum Bob, #499d was most likely an old Scott Catalogue number. I know that perf 11 Type Ia was listed as a sub-type of #499 with no letter designator around 1932. My 2006 Scott Specialized lists: Quote: 500 A140 2c deep rose, type Ia Unused=275.00 Used=240.00
Block of 4, type Ia Unused=1,150 Used=1,500. Some might be upset that you cancelled the sale after the auction ended. Especially the un/lucky winner. You did the right thing according to the rules of ebay. Personally I can't fault you for doing so. You are not a dealer that should know better. Stick around, there is a lot to be learned here. |

So nowdays we are supposed to just put auctions on ebay then cancel them after they close if we dont like the price they sold for??????????? |

I would think that the person that sent the message should be banned from ebay for interferring with an auction. Those are part of the rules as well ! Especially after the auction had concluded. Sounds like sour grapes to me. I wonder if that person had been the winning bidder, if they would have felt the same way ? |

Jim, In this case he followed ebay's rules and policies. The same ones that you and I agree to by using that site. If a seller didn't make a mistake and canceled an auction after completion due to price, then I don't condone it. However, it's impossible to know what someone else's intentions truly are. ebay tries to mitigate this by flagging sellers with numerous cancellations. Similar things occur when a new home buyer renovates their living room and finds a hoard of cash behind the drywall. Many cases are presented in courts of law with varying results. I don't always agree with laws and rules, but I do try to follow them. |

Dear Members, The party that helped ID this block was never a bidder & had no interest other than the truth. This block was listed incorrectly and with the blessing of ebay the transaction was cancelled. It seems on this Halloween night some people think its OK to take candy from a baby! Bob, What were you trying to achieve by starting this thread? Did you want help in learning how to identify Type Ia? Whatever it is, you're going to have a rough time if you don't want to listen to differing opinions. |

If that makes you feel better, but you got the feedback you deserved. The e-mail was most likely a result of the sale being posted on this forum shortly after the auction close. I'm going to be waiting at my mailbox for checks from all of the buyers that got great deals on any of my ebay auctions. As soon as I get them, I'll re-imburse any sellers I may have taken advantage of in the last 15 years. |

As Jack Nicholson said in A Few Good Men "You can't handle the truth" The truth is you listed an item on ebay. It sold for way more than you expected. You should have been happy, honored that listing and full filled the contract you entered into with the buyer. The buyer would have been happy, everyone is happy ! The fact that someone outside of the transaction intervened, has made both buyer and seller miserable. How does it work in real estate ? Can sellers just change their mind without repercussions ? |

Bob, I know several folks in the real estate business. If you've been in it for 38 years you well know honor and truth are not prevalent there anymore than in other business dealings. I doubt you ventured into real estate without doing some homework first. You should do your homework on selling your father and grandfathers stamp holdings too. Since you failed to do that before this listing, you should have honored the commitment you made to sell the block, learn your lesson, and then go forward with learning what you have before listing any other items. Had you come here first, you would have received the assistance you needed from knowledgeable collectors/dealers and been given web sites to use. By not honoring the sale and "reneging", you place yourself in the position to receive some heated criticism rather than the help you want. I hope you will reconsider your action and go through with the transaction you entered into with the buyer.

I get it. If the seller had a 499 and was selling it as a 500 and someone lets him know it was identified incorrectly, and cancels the auction it's OK.
But if he really has a 500 and sells it as a 499, someone lets him know it was identified incorrectly, and cancels the auction it's not OK.
makes perfect sense. Perhaps we need a website called stampdumber to go along with stampsmarter for the 2 different trains of thought |

Dear Member, Yes a real estate transaction can be cancelled after due diligence and an inspection normally by a buyer. However many transactions are cancelled due to an inexperienced or naive seller.The item was LISTED INCORRECTLY. ebay blessed this cancellation by a novice, not a dealer. Please get over it!! Bob |
