Yes, 'fold' is a poor choice of words. I mean to say that it looks like there is an imperfection in the paper and that it extends beyond the printed portion of the stamp.

Bobone, it does not look like a fold, and it certainly does not look like a plate crack. Plate cracks are much more jagged looking! If anything it looks like a scratched plate, or the stamp may have been scratched after it was put on the cover? The pictures are not very clear!

Peter

Looks like a pre-printing paper crease to me. Does it show as a crease on back?

The stamp is on cover so it's hard to tell.. I'm starting to think that it may be a crease after all. I looked at it sideways with 20 power and It seems to have a ridge . plus I slide a piece of paper down on it and it caught.. So I guess I have the answer.. Thanks guys for the help.Bob

Here are two Scott #11A with pre-printing paper creases. In each case, the creases have opened up after printing, probably from soaking.

bobone: It does appear to be a pre-printing paper creases

CC - they don't just open up when they are soaked - they are intentionally coaxed open for display so they look more dramatic

bobonei used a program to darken the lows and high of your stamp around the area of concern...The dark line is recessed part of the stamp and the ink (higher area) is lighter..It would suggest as eyeonwall stated..Pre fold...In my opinion...Could be wrong.
