Hi guys...Was looking at this cover from the La Salle Hotel in 1937...There is a signature n the back..Would the signature on the back be from say, the manager of the Hotel at that time in 1937..?

Looks like Marin A. Stuarus...?

Could not find anything about that signature except the picture of the Chicago Hotel...Any information is appreciated.

Thanks, Robert

Robert, from the looks of it and reading the back I have a feeling Mr. Stearns was a guest at the hotel. In another thread I was reading something about glue and how it causes foxing...................

The possible addressee could be Theresa N Garfield is what KGB is trying to say.
Robert, I looked at the sender and that could also read Marie A. Stearns?

Sorry, wert. I was in a hurry but should have explained. I was looking for the addressee.

Peter may be right about the sender being Marie. I think it`s more likely `Maria,` but I`ve not been able to place her as late as 1937.

it's not foxing. It's a stain caused by the glue used to make the envelope.
tape doesn't cause foxing, though another poster seems to imply that it creates an environment that promotes foxing.

Foxing is a fungus and can be present with or without tape.

The signature on the back appears to be the same handwriting as is on the front. One possible explanation may be that Miss Garfield was so poor at penmanship that she was in the process of being abducted by aliens, specialized in this area, in the process of writing the letter. Miss Garfield, knowing that she would not be available to receive the letter if returned, put the name of her roommate/friend Marie Stearns on the other side should such a situation arise. This would nicely explain everything since 1937 was not an election year.

IBFS, sadly, your theory falls apart. 1937 was the year in which LBJ ran for congress.

That was only a Special Election. But technically yes I suppose it could be called an "election year". This is yet another example of a beautiful theory destroyed by an ugly fact.
