As a beginner collector I have fun with stuff like this.
I wonder how many other folks have in their collections, what I call, near misses?

#25 strip of three on a cover, I think is wonderful and probably valuable. Unfortunately, mine's a "near miss".

Anyone else?

What's a near miss? I have a triple rate cover franked with 25's for sale on ebay right now. Yours is better but honestly probably not that valuable. If sold on ebay the price wouldn't go much higher than $50-75. You may struggle to even get $50. Great strike of that Boston CDS!

sinclair2010, the near miss moniker is because of the faulty/damaged stamp. Add to it the crease and wrinkle of the envelope...

I was thinking, if the stamps were all sound, the value might be $150-175 range. Not so?

Crow-- great thread, and thanks for starting it.

OK....I'll only post this if Winston promises no comments...because I certainly deserve it.

This isn't a near miss. This is a complete freaking cluster miss, but I wanted a reference copy, and I bid 1/20th CV in a Harmer's auction for it. Never thought I'd get it....and after putting it into Photoshop, I'm wondering if it has too much on the salmon side of the red hues to be truly pigeon blood, and I'm also wondering if the cert is accurate, but here it is:

Stamp is 1/3 cut away, but it's a certified pigeon blood 64a. A huge freaking miss.....

Please don't laugh! Being a student of this issue, and like most collectors with a budget and not having unlimited funds, I'm hoping to find one someday, and sure that I will, but it does help sometimes to have a reference copy, regardless of condition.

Ray

stampcrow, if the stamps were sound that would be different. Still though, there is not a lot of demand out there for #25's. They are so much more common than the catalogue suggests. With sound stamps it would be an interesting cover but it would still sell way below cat value. A smaller cover would be better too. Don't misunderstand, I like your cover and I really like that Boston cancel. I have a Boston cancel fetish...

Ray,

I believe all stamps have value. Having a good reference copy is crucial to collecting shades. The problem with certs is they never tell you whether you have a fair example or a great example of a particular shade.

What kind of a cert comes with it?

That's good to know and it will help guide my future decisions.

Speak of the devil... Yes it's a green cancel, and yes it's a 62B.
