I was looking thru my 634's and came across this abnormality. Is this s plate crack (none listed in Scotts for a 634) or just debris making for a wild hair?
See "Encyclopedia of Plate Varieties on U.S. Bureau-Printed Postage Stamps" by Loran C. French. The book, originally issued by the Bureau Issues Association (now United States Stamp Society) is currently out of print, but is available for sale on the Internet or on loan from the American Philatelic Society Research Library to APS members. It lists all of the numerous verified 634 plate varieties, many with illustrations. Additional plate varieties with only one example recorded at the time were not included. The Scott US Specialized catalog lists only an infinitesimal fraction of known plate varieties.
Peter, your were right as Clark confirmed! Thank you for both of your replies.
Clark, that book sounds very interesting. I believe I found where it can be had for approx. $35. The one thing I love about stamp collecting is the virtually limitless amount of specialties one can delve into and the many varieties of each stamp, some marketable others only self-appreciated.
I have that book, and find that there are (7) full pages devoted to Scott 634. Each page with about 12 pictures and 25 descriptions. I did notice several recuts in the hair, but didn't immediately find a picture matching the OP's stamp.
I would highly recommend this book. It covers Scott 246 through 1734 plus air post, special delivery, etc. Definitely a good reference book.
Thanks revcollector and you too Parttime. Found the book on a Chicago dealers website for $35 in great condition and snapped it up! After a short perusal it looks really interesting.
