Sounds like a Scott #136, but Geoffha is correct, an image would help. If it is a Scott #136 I grill, used examples sell for US $2 - $5.

Don, I would agree with your retail price estimate if this were the H grill stamp (136) but if it really, as is stated by the OP, is a 136A (3 cent National Bank Note issue with I Grill)it could fetch more than your estimate. A sound 136A used in VF centering (cat is around $100) is going to go for more than $2-$5 at retail. If it is a 136A, then the condition of this particular stamp would be the determining factor as to its retail price.

Rhett,
Understood, there are several 136A sold on ebay in the last few weeks that went for under $10. Granted that condition and centering are critical and perhaps I shouldn't be assuming a lesser quality stamp.

Don,

Unless the seller has a really good reputation, buyers will assume that stamps offered on ebay at auction are defective and will bid accordingly. It appears that the price for a decent used copy would be in the $40 range for fine centering, in line with the Scott Valuing guide. A few at auction have sold quite cheaply, but perhaps the stamps are 136 instead of 136A. If the seller cannot determine the difference between an early or late state grill or fail to provide a back scan, buyers should be wary.

Among the listings currently running is a badly rendered image of a pair with fake grills. No wonder buyers bid low.
