Does anyone know what this is? I can't find any information about an error associated with this design. I wonder if it might be a fake. Any information would be appreciated.

Yes it's a fake. Some collectors like to make these fake inverts as a gag. The usual method is to cut the oval from one stamp and stick it onto another.

Ha! It is indeed what you say. Thanks. It's not even glued on very well--clearly just a gag. I'm a little embarrassed. I looked at the printing, the color, the back, which all looked right. But it never occurred to me that the center part was just glued on!

No need to feel embarrassed at all. This type of stamp has been posted many times on various boards. Oddly enough, 40+ years of collecting and I've never encountered one myself!

By the way, welcome to Stamp Community Family! I hope you stay, post some of your stamps, and join in the conversation!

I believe the term for these is "transposed vignette", back in the 30s people made these and tried to use them postally. If they succeeded they had a nice curiosity for their collection. Occasionally you see these used on cover examples on ebay and they will bring $50-60.

Khj, thanks, on both counts. This seems like a nice forum. My dad recently passed away and left me no one to talk stamps with (not to mention his rather disorganized collection).

KRelyea, I have not seen one on a cover, but I will keep my eyes open. I wonder where my dad got this--probably as a door prize or something.

Since this stamp was fully printed from one full plate in a single color rather than from two separate colored plates that partially printed parts of the stamp separately such as vignette plate and frame plate, this stamp could not result in such an invert.
