Just going by this scan, how would you describe the condition of this stamp? (There is a hinge on back)

Thanks.

To me it would be a space filler - the perforations seem to leave a lot to be desired. Also something going on in the bottom left corner.

It has F-VF centering, lightly soiled, a crease at upper left corner, perforation thin at upper right, scuff at lower left corner, some short perforations, BUT a beautiful light red cross-roads fancy cancel. It has faults, but I wouldn't call it a space filler.

"Spacefiller" is a horrible term and I would gladly ban it from philatelic parlance.

This stamp is solidly Very Fine Condition, a term with well defined expectations. It most definitely has Faults - perf issues on all sides, a scuff/tear spot at LL, what appears to be a thin at top and it could use a gentle bath!

I would add this to my personal collection in a heartbeat, lacking a red crossroads of this type on the 12c Bamknote.

I would add this to my great-grandfather's collection even faster. He was not a wealthy man, and this fits exactly into the "faulty" condition he collected. In some of the 19th-C series, my VF+ collection is less complete than what has become my "family legacy" collection! I continue to add to this collection, and in the traditional condition. Have dealers looked at me funny when asking for this material? Not after I explain what I am doing and why.

Bottom line. This is nowhere near a full SCV stamp. I would be looking to pay no more than 15% SCV. Anyone who tells you that this has no value is wrong.

Is that a New York Foreign Mail cancel? Kirke, in the May 2016 Chronicle of the US Philatelics Classic Society, provides a new categorization of the NYFM cancels but shows this negative cross used in 1863, which is too early for Scott 151 (1870).

Possibly NY Foreign Mail.
Check page 3 of this pdf on the subject. Dated 1870

Yes, this is NYFM. It will take time for collectors to integrate Nick Kirke's new approach towards these cancels. This type of basic "fancy" is going to have a much longer service period than previously thought. Simple to maintain. Simple to reproduce. Why wouldn't it be around for a decade?
