I found a perf measuring guide in the shoebox of loose stamps and I used the Stamp Smarter tool to attempt identification. Is this a Scott #504 stamp? According to the perf measuring guide, it has 11 perfs.

You picked a good one to start with. Wait until you get to watermarks and toga lines, thsee issues have frustrated seasoned veterans #128522;

:) Excellent! I don't have any supplies to identify watermarks yet but I'm noticing that sometimes I can see them if I hold a stamp up to the bright lights in my dining room. The stamps from the German Empire seem to be particularly easy to see watermarks on. Haven't heard of toga lines - more researching to do! :)

Dicentra,

Here's two websites that will assist you in W-F identification. It takes time but eventually you'll get the hang of it. Its like a whole hobby in of itself!

THE SWEDISH TIGER - http://www.theswedishtiger.com/ID.html

STAMPSMARTER - http://www.stampsmarter.com/1847_landing.html

Good Luck,
Jack Kelley

a quick and easy watermark detector is to use ronsonal lighter fluid if you don't have any detector fluid...and a black dish of course. it works, but doesn't evaporate as well.
