my guess: a naval cancel, First Day in Commission [of some boat]

and NOT SC 596, the impression looks like SC 552.

I agree with @chasa. Your stamp is a #552, not a #596. Color is too deep to be a #596.

The color, and cancel, are all wrong for 596. Size, especially measured with ordinary measurement tools, is not dispositive for this issue. You will need to get and learn how to use a Kisulas perforation gauge, and read the many threads and articles on 596 to understand why your stamp is not the 16th known example. There are a dozen threads on 596 in this forum that review the reasons in detail. In addition, the evidence you have provided thus far--a couple of blurry images--would never be convincing to anyone. A 1200 dpi scan of both front and reverse is needed.

But, if none of this is convincing and you're sure you hit the jackpot, go ahead and send it to the Philatelic Foundation in New York for certification, paying their fees in advance and prepaying insured express courier delivery both ways. You won't be able to sell it as a 596 without a certificate, and anyway, what do a bunch of amateurs on the internet know? Leave it to the experts.

Chris

brent150, if you're 100% sure...why the question about the cancellation? 2009 SCV for a machine canceled 596 is $130,000.00. You should be contacting the Philatelic Foundation or the APS or some other certification entity.

The measurement I'm sure about the first day through me off b/c I wasn't sure if sc596 being made from coil waste and not disclosed until years later could have had that postmark .I'm not as sure about the perforations on the sides ordered a Perforation gauge..waiting on its arrival thinking it might be a 632 tried comparing to other stamps but the perforations are not in that great of condition I counted them at thirteen the same as pics of sc596 but also seen some 632 pic online that had 13?????????

To add more pics be sure to use different names for each. Also, counting perks is not the same as using a perfect gauge. Good luck.

"FIRST DAY" in this case does not mean "FIRST DAY OF ISSUE". That type of hand cancel wasn't used until the late 1930s. The hand cancel is probably from a ship cancel and used on the first day of service of the ship etc.

This is absolutely NOT a #596. Dismissing the rarity of non-precancelled stamps, the cancel definitively rules it out. This was clipped from a US navy warship commissioning cover. The earliest I have this style in my collection is on a USS Portland cover, 1933. I believe that it may go back a bit, circa 1929 on the CL/CA treaty cruisers but in no way any earlier enough to support your identification.
