So I found these two stamps today. I'm new at this so thank you for your patience with my questions. I picked up the Scotts Cat. today and I am trying to figure out the perf counting thing. I inherited a lot of stamps that are in no order and have begun trying to sort through them. What does it mean when there is a cross symbol next to a perf number ( I see it throughout my catalog)? Thanks

Hi upnort. It would be easier to figure out what perforations your stamps are if you get a perforation gauge. The counting method is not very precise, especially if you have lots of stamps.
To understand all the symbols in the Scott catalog please read the introduction in the front of the book.

The precancel on Scott # 596 is KANSAS CITY MO. on two lines rather than KANSAS CITY MO. on three lines.
