I came across these two stamps (348 & 445). Although some good qualities both are short/narrow and one of the edges certainly looks trimmed. On that edge there appears to be some color that matches the color of the stamp. My question is what causes this - is it a center line from the sheet on the trimmed edge or something similar?

Thanks

Not much to tell by these pictures. The top stamps looks iffy, but we need a normal picture of the stamps, one where the whole stamp is showing ( with both edges ) and preferably a scan. A scan is generally distortion-less especially when one needs to see what the straight edge looks like.

Michael -
On your 1c Franklin, you are correct about the line of color. It is a remnant of the guideline for pane separation. It is a normal occurrence for many straight-edge stamps, and many believe that it actually detracts from the value of the stamp. The right side clearly looks trimmed, even with the cropped photo. This was done at some point to make the sheet stamp appear to be a coil stamp - hence Don's "fake" reply. You will find LOTS of these things as you collect W-F stamps.

It is very difficult to determine what is going on with your 3c Washington, as too little of the stamp is visible. I would guess that here again, the smidge of color at the top is from a cut guide line.

For further pictures, please provide the best quality possible. Stamps should be properly oriented and completely visible. Scanning is best, but if that is not an option, your photos need to be straight-on from above. Angled pics are less than useless.
