This seller has 2 paste-up strips of 4 for sale. The holes and overall strips look good, but the paste-up joints are misaligned. Belasco, in his book on Vending and Affixing stamps comments that by this time Schermack perforated imperf sheets, and then cut them into strips. And that paste-up joints should be well aligned. So...I was wondering people's opinion on the validity of this two strips. Other than the misalignment, they seem like legit paste-ups. Would someone try to fake a paste-up? The value is still going to be less than $50. Perplexing.

I have a theory on V&A paste ups.

I believe that "request items", those that were sold directly to collectors and dealers, were never actually coiled but were made available in strips of 20 or blocks. Dealers then would split them into pairs and strips for sale. Should someone request or decide to offer a paste up, the dealer would simply create it himself. Some would do a better job than others. Hence the possible mis-alignment. That would most likely constitute the majority of the mint V&A multiples found in the marketplace.

Much scarcer, would be a paste up pair or strip that actually came from a coil. As I'm sure you know, these were provided to commercial mailers in coils of 3000, to be used in their Mailometer Mailing Machines. These were high speed affixing machines. Perhaps when a machine jammed part of a coil might have to be removed and the coil re-threaded. But even then the part of the coil removed would most likely just be applied to envelopes by hand.

The bottom strip of 4 does appear to have something under the tab, either the engraver's initials or a plate #

Thanks for the responses. Kcaramat--I had wondered about request items, too (since so many V&A multiples don't show usual coil traits due to being request items--such as non-parallel sides).

Here's a better example on ebay. Much more like you were expecting.
