I collect stamps on which I can read the name of the place where it was canceled.
Someone who clipped off a US envelope stamp in a most unfortunate way has left me with a puzzler. Maybe you can help me figure it out?
This stamp was canceled in 1859. I think the town was Pecan Grove. I think the state was Louisiana (LA). But the first A of ALA or the F of FLA could have been clipped off.
I haven't been able to locate any present town of Pecan Grove in any of those three states. I've been through Alan Patera and John Gallagher's checklists of post offices in Louisiana and Florida (I can't find the Alabama checklist), but no luck there.
Can anyone help me?

It's Louisiana. No Pecan Grove in Alabama or Florida. There's one in Texas. Try this site - http://www.postalhistory.com/postoffices.asp It's very helpful for identifying post offices.

The most complete reference books by far are the Richard Helbock post office lists. Eight volumes in paperback, last printing I believe was 2007. Published by 'La Posta Publications' and should be available via ebay or perhaps from postal history dealers. They have been worth every nickel to me.

Thank you all for your swift replies & confirmation of my guesses. More valuable, tho, are the links you gave me to more reference sources. Philatelists are a great bunch!
