It is the centerline on a large sheet of stamps when it comes off the press. It is then cut into four smaller panes along these horizontal and vertical lines to make four smaller panes. Please see the introduction to the Scott Specialized catalog.

Here's an example of what Peter was telling you to look up in the Scott catalog. This is known as a joint line block, in this case, a vertical line. It is created by excess ink which accumulates in the wiping of the plates where they butt up against each other. |

Lumhechati, your stamp was printed in 400 subject plates. The sheet was then divided into 4 panes of 100 stamps each. The red line is called a cut line and it is where the sheet was cut into the 4 panes. Your stamp is either from the top or bottom left pane and 10th stamp in its row. |

Stallzer's answer is correct. Stampman's example is also a cut line and is NOT an accumulation of ink in a joint as he suggests. |

Lumhechati, correct. The info on this is in the Scott catalog. Another very good place to learn about the basics of stamps is http://stampsmarter.com . And of course you can always ask here. Peter |

Here is a visual of the sheet layout, the darkened stamps will show the cut line or have 1 or 2 natural straight edges. |

Lumhechati, personally I collect modern US stamps. Specifically the Transportation Coils that were issued between 1981 an say 1995. As such I collect them with lines ( not the same as yours ) and all other strange EFO's. So yes, people do collect this stuff.
