Hi all

first off don't you hate how the net times out as you click post after writing a full big post and then you have to do it all over again.... that just happened :(

------------------------------------

anyways.. I was looking at sorting and I been wondering whats in it. I'm putting the stamps into their countries and that's it so far. I've seen people here talk about cataloguing and I do have the 2004 Stanly gibbons World stamp catalogues but don't know is it finding catalogue number and value of the stamp or something more ?

Also storing the stamps I was thinking of getting office box for envelopes then some small envelope to put them in... is that a good way to store the mass amount of stamps from a big lot ?

Thanks
Jason BD

Hi Jason,

Good to see you back in the forum.

I use envelopes to sort my different countries into. Then I store those in a shoe box until I'm ready to catalogue them.
Cataloging them, for me, involves just finding the year, catalogue number and value. For others that get in to varieties you would need to work out colour variations, watermarks and perforations. However you probably won't find that info in the S.G. catalogue.

do not store any stamps in envelopes or plastic bags in loose groups
(especially unused with gum on the backs) or you risk them becoming glued together!

Sorting- I collect precancels and when I sort them it is first by state and then by city. I place them in glassines until I am ready to place them in a stock book or on stock pages. I also have used for very short term sorting a plastic bead sorting tray with a lid to keep the piles more orderly. This comes in handy if the table isn't available or I want to use a TV tray.

Cataloging- I consider this to be placing stamps in order by Scott number & year for my US stamp albums. That way it is easier to look up the catalog value in the future.
