Hello,
I am very interested in the development of the Hanseatic League that existed in Northern Europe starting about the middle of the twelfth century. It rose in economic power and influenced many city states and countries during the period of the Middle Ages. I am also interested in the rise of the Medieval period or aka the Middle ages. The advancement of civilization, during this period boggles the mind. I am very interested in learning how it would be possible to be able to target stamps that highlight these periods of growth, and episodes of history, if it is all possible. This would be a rewarding project for me to work on. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. Joel Grebin

Hi Joel, it's funny that you should bring up the Hanseatic Leauge-- I have always been interested in it, since Holland was part of it. Therefor, some stamps of the cities would qualify for a topical collection. I have some stamps with the Leauge, they are somewhere n my United Europe/sympathy issues stuff; i'll try to find them. Joel, You may want to contact the American Topical Association (ATA)they have several checklists, pamphletts, and handbooks on a variety of world wide topical collections. Also, search the American Philatelic Society (APS) for specialty societies or chapters for you interests. |

Any help will be appreciated. To Me, these are very interesting topics and I know that civilization moved foward once humanity came out of the dark ages. I know there are stamps out there that illustrate the Renaissance, the Medieval Period and commercial growth of Europe. I have an idea but don't have the catalog numbers. Joel |

Joel:
You best bet is to spend the $30 and JOIN the ATA for a few years. I did that. Their bi-monthly publication is well worth it, and the handbooks they sell are inexpensive and packed with information.
That's what I did for my Cardiology collection and it was a great help.

Joel, I found the stamp re. Hanseatic -- and there is a companion stamp(s) Sweden #2541-43I. I checked the ATA http://www.americantopicalassn.org/...cles_g-i.htm and it seems they may have a study group- rather than joining the ATA you can join the study group- provided the study group does their own stamp checklist. (I belong to the Windmill Study Unit - not the ATA). |

Hi Phil, thanks for the link. When I click on it it takes me to the ATA site but I can't get past the H. Nothing happens. Does that study group have a web site? Thanks for the help. Joel |

Joel, just click once the "H" and another "H" shows up showing that there is a checklist of 6 pages for Hanse-- but I can not find a study unit... I went on a Dutch web site under "Hanze" and it has the most wonderful maps etc .. and it does have an English translation. In my watermill collection I have stamps with the Krantor tower from Danzig, little did I realize it was used for the Hanse commerce! You learn something every day! Good luck collecting! Jopie |
