For those of you who do not know, I have found a new job! It pays better than the last one and I am living the dream! I work for Ian Kimmerly Stamps!
My job is not working the floor (I do one day a week), but rather pulling all the stuff out of the back, describing it, cataloguing it, and pricing it.
I love it! Monday-Friday, 9-5:30.
I was wondering if anyone else has worked in a stamp shop. I'd like to compare notes.
David

Good for you David. Nice one.
I don't work IN a stamp shop, but I do work for a stamp dealer. I have worked for a couple of dealers, but the one I work for now, I've known for over 30 years. He works out of his house. Mostly I catalogue, sort, and bring his stock up to date after he has been at a show. I have helped him at shows dozens of times, plus taken over totally for him quite a few times when he was ill. I do help with the occasional customer who comes to the house as well. He was the person who talked me into becoming a dealer in my own right. I don't have the customer base that he has, but it's still a lot of fun. I really enjoy meeting the people.
Actually David, maybe I asked before if you might know the dealer I work for. John Roberts from Oakville. He used to be at the shows in Fenelon Falls, Cobourg and that area, and up until about 15 years ago, he was doing a lot of shows in Montreal as well.

ok for all those people who would pay to work in a stamp shop (i really dont need your body parts) I can offer you a job if you pay me well enough. Please note this offer is only open to members in good standing and repute after the last incident I cannot be careful enough. All transportation and hoteling expenses will have to be borne by the employee and as a bonus they will get to paint the signage that I have not got around to doing :)
K I would love to have you on board even if you waste time thumbing as long as we meet condition number 1 :D |

Actually I know a guy with a "stamp shop" hes in our club...but he says only 8 percent of his income is from stamps/catalogs/supplies..he used to make his money selling sports cards by the case until that went bust...now he makes a lot more trading silver and gold that he buys from street people..i could probably work there but its a tiny place and hes always in one spot behind the display case on the phone getting quotes...i would be in his full view all the time..who needs a boss like that ??? |

David...any free samples ? I think both Phil and Meostamps worked at Gimbals in the early 1940's
When I was around 15 yrs old, I worked at a small Stamp/sign printing store. However, at that time you had to be 16 and have "working papers". So I was paid 50 cents an hour in stamps. Only worked on Saturdays.
Great news David Eh ?

Jopie.. I am visualizing you working in a stamps store. You will spend more in a week buying stamps, than you earn |

Thank-you all for the good wishes.
Phil: I'd never loot the place... I am an APS member.
I do work! I was cataloguing mint and used Newfoundland, to-day... a hot seller! I was breaking up part sheets of Nfld. and pricing the plate blocks.
Doodles: Sorry to say, but I've never met, nor heard of John. Oh, I'll be in Burlington at Christmastime... your neck of the woods!
Bobgggg & t360: Thanks!
