I think I saw a dialogue on which Scott's catalog year publications to avoid and which to buy(or use). Now I can't find it. Have lots of research to do. Thanks.

In the past, I had recommended against purchasing Scott catalogs for the first year in which they were in color. This would be the 2006 Scott Worldwide catalog and the 2005 Scott US Specialized. A lot of errors were introduced in the process of swapping out all those black and white stamp images for color images. I realize I am shooting myself in the foot if I ever try to sell my 2006 catalogs. Most of the new errors that were introduced during these "first year" color catalogs were corrected in the subsequent year. In terms of "glare" from the glossy pages, the 2009 catalogs are a significant improvement (my opinion). k |

Hi stampdog..... I don't know of any reason to avoid any of the Scott cats........however, to get the newest info without the cost of new issues I would suggest that you look for cats that are just a year or two old, many are often listed on ebay. |

Kim......
I suspect that somehow you can see when I'm responding to a question here and you jump in ahead of me because you can type much faster than I can.......but being reminded, I agree that the 05 specialized and 06 WW cats were not the best issues produced by Scott & Amos Press.

I have been watching some 2009 catalogs on e-bay, ~150.00 or so for the complete set (so far). But, I expect even the 2008 would be better than nothing. Thanks for the info. |

I would consider $150 for the entire six volume 2009 set an acceptable price (S&H or tax included). Less than that would be a good deal.
General rule of thumb that I use is <$150 for set from last year <$100 for set from 2 years ago
Remember, that includes shipping/tax. Just my opinion.

Oh, I agree. I've seen several sets, and I expect more to show up as those who change every year start selling their 2009 sets, or even 2008 sets. I'll keep watch for a set, or if I can get the individual ones cheap enough, do it one at a time. I have lots more sorting to do. |

The disadvantage of buying volumes one at a time is that the cumulative shipping costs can be significant. However, if you don't need the entire set, it would be reasonable to buy only the volumes you need.
I rarely buy brand new Scott catalogs. The last new current year catalog I bought was back in 2004 when the 2005 Scott US Specialized came out in color for the first time. I was really disappointed. Since then, when it comes to Scott catalogs, I only buy used ones. |

I'll just have to watch the auctions and if I can get a complete set with reasonable shipping I will, but if I can spread the costs over several months and get one at a time and maybe get some good deals--that might work as well. |

Have been looking at other sources (non library) and came up with some single issues at Biblio.com. I can get the 2009 J-O for $16.25 (free shipping), and the G-I for $31.27 (free shipping). Even the e-bay ones are ending up at $142+ and you still have to add $20+ for shipping. I may just get them one at a time. Seems the US and A-B are more expensive than the others individually. |

Quote: Seems the US and A-B are more expensive than the others individually. Some volumes tend to be in higher demand, and so will get bid up in the auctions. It is my non-scientific observation that volumes 1 and 3 tend to go highest. It can be difficult to complete a full set when buying them individually, and you will run into the problem of the wear and tear (appearance). However, that is the approach I take. I think I've only bought complete sets twice in my life. Once in 1983 (new set) and also the 2005 set (used). Have fun looking/searching! k |
