I received an auction lot with $0.34 postage due in my mailbox yesterday. The mailman . . . excuse me, I have to be politically correct here . . . the mail carrier left a little envelope into which I deposited $0.35 like the good citizen I am.

Although I'm not sure it fiscally responsible to use this system for small amounts due to the cost of the envelope and time involved, I appreciate that the USPS is making this effort to be customer friendly.

Has anyone else seen this?

I phoned my Mother yesterday and she told me that she had just received a Christmas card from my sister and on the envelope was a handstamp '8p to pay' !
But the envelope was posted through the letterbox as normal with no request for the 8p !
So the card was two weeks late, presumably because of the lack of postage, and yet when it was finally delivered, no dues were asked for. How pathetic is that ?
I guess I should not be surprised with Royal Mail but really.......

Londonbus1....A Royal Mail thread coming soon.

Yes Greg, it has happened to me. On two occasions I've had that nice little postage due envelope left for me. I was very grateful that the letter carrier saved me a trip to the post office.

Greg,
I've received a postage due envelope as well. Mine came with a notation that the letter carrier had personally paid the USPS as a courtesy to me and he/she was requesting reimbursement.

I took it to be an individual letter carrier's choice, not a USPS policy.

Experienced stamps need a home too. I'd rather have an example that is imperfect than no example.
I collect for enjoyment, not investment.

I have home delivery. I have received Postage Paid envelopes stating postage was due as well as a glassine enclosed cover saying postage was due. I have never seen an envelope left behind to collect any postage due.

I had mailed an envelope within Canada with the proper postage on it. The stamps I used were older self-adhesives and somehow came unstuck and were peeled off or fell off during the journey through the postal system. I had put my return address on it as usual.

Two to three weeks later I received it back with a label covering the address saying the envelope had incorrect postage and please put xx amount on the envelope, peel off the label and remail. The amount owing included the cost due to return the letter to me also. I peeled off the label and it left a clear 2 inch by 4 inch (approximately) plastic stuck on piece that covered the address, stuck the extra postage on and off it went again. It must go somewhere for someone to figure all this out and then be returned. Maybe because of the clear piece remaining they could tell it should be examined again to make sure I had been good and affixed proper postage.?

This has happened to me on several occasions just based on the amount/volume of mail we generate from our household and it can be frustrating, especially where there is 'glue shadow'/reside showing where postage had been applied and in some cases there remains only half a cancel. In the latter cases, I have shown the cover to our carrier and he waived any charges. That all being said, I do understand that the postal service needs to deter under franking of mail, I, like laswabbie, have to question the economics.
