I found these black 1048 stamps several years ago on a package in the mail room of a company I worked for. Are they worth anything ?

Hi King:

Welcome to SCF.... please tell us a little about yourself.

These stamps may be a colour changling... or....

Best to have an experienced eye have a look at them.

David

I cannot confirm without physically examining the stamps, but it appears you have a color changeling that is common for that issue.

On some older stamps that have brown, green, orange, red, or yellow ink, the compound lead chromate is used. Prolonged exposure to air under certain conditions may result in sulphuration by pollutants in the air, changing the lead chromate to lead sulfide (black) -- resulting in the "blackening" of the color. The color change is not instant, but progresses over time. That is why sometimes the color may appear to turn into a different color, but will eventually transition to black over time if the stamp is not protected.

OK David : Here goes, very short Bio.
I started collecting stamps at the age of 8. I was never very sophisticated about it, and did it in spurts. I am now 84 and have no one to leave my collection to. I flew a B24 in WWII, went to school on the GI Bill. I worked for Nevada Power Company (Now NVEnergy)in Las Vegas for 36 years and retired as Vice President of Rates and Regulatory Affairs .
I have been living in SW Colorado since I retired. Lately I have been going through all my stamps and have sold my Scott Hingless album and two Plate Block Albums on ebay.
Over the years while working for Nevada Power I would periodically check the mail room for stamps, and I saved hundreds, envelope and all.
Thirty or forty years ago I purchased a H.E. Harris Company Inc. album "STAMPS OF WORLD WAR II" with some packets of stamps. H.E.Haris has gone out of business and I have not found any mention of "STAMPS OF WORLD WAR II". Anyway my one volume has blossomed into 6 Volumes, and I am planning to sell them. They are categorized in parts.
PREFACE TO WAR
PART 1: LEADERS OF WAR
PART 2: ALLIED NATIONS
PART 3: AXIS NATIONS
PART 4: AXIS PUPPETS
PART 5 CAPTIVE NATIONS
PART 6: VICTORY

Since I was 18 when I went into the Army Air Force, I didn't pay much attention to the history of the war, so for my own satisfaction in my embellished album I have included a brief history of each nation involved along with their stamps. I really don't know if the albums will be of interest to anyone or not.
I ramble, thanks for your interest;
Conn

Hello conn.....

Welcome to the club.

Your collection sounds like something I would enjoy spending many hours with just looking and reading.....it's a shame you have no one to pass it down to.

If you'd like Harris products they can be found here.....

Thanks everyone for your interest and comments. I think khj's explanation is probably right. As I recall the package the stamps were on came from a company that specialized in making blueprints. Lots of chemicals in the air. So I have another set of freaks.
Again thanks
Conn
