I have about a hundred and fifty different machins. The more I get, the more there are. I have a Gibbons catalog, but the arrangement there leaves a lot to be desired.
Is there a comprehensive on-line reference of ALL the machins up to the present?
Who are some good dealers specializing in Machins (if there are any)

Hi rohumpy, You might try this site and see if it is what you are looking for. I think it is very good. http://www.adminware.ca/machin.htmI don't really collect Machins, but had aquired some, so sorted them out by this site's criteria. Dave N. <>< |

I think you may need the Concise catalogue, which is the best printed listing IMHO |

Rohumpy, As Oldtriggerguy has said, the http://www.adminware.ca/machin.htm website is probably the best ONLINE reference that is out there now. Offline, the Gibbons Concise is probably the most reasonable reference out there, but you do need to spend time with it and get familiar with how it lists Machins. If you want an unreasonable reference there is the Deegam book and the recently published Machin Collectors Club Catalog. In Machins it is very easy to become unreasonable. As for dealers, there are a gillion Machin dealers in the UK pls see http://www.machins.org/Machin%20Dealers.htm In the US its is a little scarcer. JET in Rhode Island do a big Machin business but are not an online dealer. Hope this helps. -Larry |

Hi all. Thanks for the responses. The sites suggested are great.
One question further. I tried to register for the Machin Forum. There was a line which was required, and asked for the answer to a question. I do not see a question, so can't answer it.
Also, what kind of forum would limit the number of times you try to register? I tried three times and was prevented from trying again. Seems odd. |

I can't see the question either, but I that's probably because I am using a Mac. As for locking you out on trying to register: I guess that spambots are a real problem. And, btw the activity on that board seems to be pretty spotty and mostly messages from just two participants. Not nearly as balanced as here. Just my 2d. -Larry |

Talking about Machins, why so few Brits posting on this board - we are well represented by Americans, Canadians, Australians, Kiwis and others... |

I can see that I am going to have to make some decisions as to just what to collect. Who knew that there were so many of them? Obviously I didn't. I thought maybe a couple of hundred and then the new issues.
Even the Washington-Franklins don't approach this level of complexity. |

Heres a few more to add to the complexities :) I own one of these -- I will see if I can get a scan of it. These were used by the printers to colour match the prints. They say there are between 32 and 36 different colours. StampStudy |

Rohumpy, Yes, the complexity here is, at times, off the charts. You can get inti all sorts of esoteria BUT you can keep simple. If you limit yourself to a collection just based on value and color, your dealing with a manageable size, unfortunately more then a couple of hundred, though. But there is also nothing lost by starting that way as you can always go deeper. The master of Machins is a fellows named Douglas Myall who issues an CD-based Machin book, and he will be amongst the first to counsel that you set your limits and you determine what you wish to collect. You always have the option to delve deeper if the inclination suits you. My fears is that if at the beginning you go too deep, you would then become discouraged and you'll drop the entire enterprise. So, start simple and give it a go and see if this really intrigues you. There is still plenty of time and opportunity to get into the direction of printing issues. And, again, just my 2 d. -Larry |

Thanks jubilee for the name. Although I don't actively collect these, I have always been impressed with their quality. Some actually appear to be 3D even though they are not.
