Welcome to Stamp Community Forum, Leah!

I no longer subscribe to the print edition of Linn's, but as I far as I have seen everything in the print edition is in the online edition except for those little subscription postcard inserts.

If it looks like there are fewer classified pages, I would probably say that's because there appear to me to be far fewer classified ads as the years pass by.

Linn's has been peddling the plastic-wrapped print edition for an additional $20. I can't wait for them to offer the shrink-wrapped online edition.

thanks for the fast reply. for years I could get sample copies of Linn's (and almost any other magazine/newspaper worldwide) just for the asking. they will no longer do this (no one will, not just Linn's), and the size/lack of ads stunned me in the on line.

It's harder to get samples because the postage rates are so high. Publishers no longer get that big of a price break on periodicals/books, especially ones going overseas.

It's not just the classified in Linn's, but the entire magazine (in terms of pages and size) that have been reduced. The coverage has been significantly reduced since the previous decade. On the other hand, the color printing and paper quality has been vastly improved over that yucky inaugural 3 months of colorization.

I haven't checked this, but I suspect that a number of the former advertisers have moved into the online selling world at any of a number of sites. Many of the advertisers do both, and for some of them, it may only be tradition (or habit) that keeps them in Linn's.

And, sadly, some have no doubt passed away, not to be replaced.

As recently as last year, Global Stamp News was still willing to send out an issue or two (and it is practically free to start with...their hard copy subscription is close to the same as Linn's online price).

There was a discussion here about Linns some time ago.
I mentioned then that I mysteriously found a copy of Linns in a rarely used email inbox. It was over a year ago and I am still getting Linns Online every week.
Am I saving much ??

Magazine publishers give out limited complimentary subscriptions to selected individuals/organizations/businesses. This is especially true in trade journals, which rely heavily on distribution to prop up their advertising rates. Hobby publications do this also, although to a much smaller level. Most trade journals, you can ask for complimentary subscriptions; unfortunately, this is usually not the case for hobby journals (a few exceptions) -- they select you, not the other way around. This has carried over to online subscriptions as well.

Somewhere sometime somehow, LB1 got on the right list, and picked up a complimentary subscription.
