I believe this is a type 3 variation of Scott 252-A89
perf. 12 x 12 1/5 ( I double checked the perfs.)
I always have trouble with the colors scarlet and carmin.

Anyone want to confirm or deny my conclusion?

Scarlet is more Red than carmine.
This looks like Carmine to me.

I will have to check the watermark...
Because I think it is either a 279Bc or 279Bf
Hoping for the first one.
Any way to find watermark with using WM fluid?

I think I agree that it is a type IV. Check out the lines in the hair. Go to the 1847usa site and make the comparison. The hair lines sure look like a Type IV.

it fits on the button, hair line, ear dots, oval edge,T in two. I have to check the watermark. This stamp came from a cover my dad rescued out of an old factory. So it hadn't seen the light of day for 100 years, before I got it.

The third link from above on the history of the dies used to produce the stamp(s) in question is a fascinating study. The hobby needs more work like this.
