We have all seen mint stamps that have adhered to
backing paper, stamp album pages perhaps.

I have this soiled but mint stamp from the Gold Coast (Ghana)
that has paper adhered to the back, but the paper
is pefectly punctured by perforations.
I have never ever seen this before.

How would that have happened? any ideas?

A few thoughts:

The perforations were added after the fact.

The paper somehow remained stuck to the stamp when somebody soaked it to get it to come off the envelope (though you say it is mint, perhaps it was used but just missed the cancellation?)

Somebody was meticulous in removing the stuck paper from between the perfs.

Hmmm...interesting... but you can see in the bottom right some of the paper is still over the perforations.

Yes, I can see the paper at the bottom.
I reckon that <must> have happened at the perforator,
I cannot see any other way to get such perfection at the punture holes.
I would say these may have been "perforator waste" that has been snaffled.

Gee I find it irritating, that I shall never know the answer

Thanks for the comments, guys.
