"Reds": Documentary Revenues On A 1946 California Grant Deed

Here are some Reds on a document from the 1940s:



Apparently Leo A. Heller sold his land in LA County to Herbert and Olive Pelton for just $10.00 on January 4, 1946.
Maybe the land was really a gift, sold for a nominal amount, perhaps to a newly married couple to build a house.

There are four "Reds" (documentary revenue stamps) on the document, and all are overprinted "Series 1945."
These stamps feature portraits of the Secretaries of the United States Treasury.




These are
Scott #R453 $10 Robert John Walker who served under President James Polk in the 1840s; and
Scott #R451 $4 John Canfield Spencer who served under President John Tyler in the 1840s.




These are
Scott #R443 20c Richard Rush, who served under President John Quincy Adams in the 1820s; and
Scott #R442 10c William Harris Crawford who served under Presidents James Madison and James Monroe in the 1810s and 1820s.

All the stamps are tied to the document by a perfin cancellation reading "R T & S Co *21446" (Feb. 14, 1946).
Unlike postage stamps perfins, which were applied to reduce pilfering but not to cancel the stamp,
these perfins were applied to cancel the stamps and to tie them to the document to ensure that they were not reused on another document.
