NICE pics! Quote: Kim just a few photo's of the perfs, they seem to be pulled all the way round the stamp. That's a VERY good sign! As I mentioned to you before, physical examination is required to make final determination. If 90% of the perf edges on the right side look like that, I would chalk it up in the "good guy" column! Did I mention, NICE pics! k |

When I get zoomed in close enough on a stamp to see that it is really just a mishmash of fibers I get a strange gooey feeling in my stomach, thinking that what seems like a solid item is really a rather fragile and delicate thing.
Let me know how that camera works out for you, SV. |

I love playing with my digital microscope! I have three of the things now - one of them has a very slow screen refresh but has some sort of software magic going on for focusing on a very wide range of focal lengths. The second one needs the focus dialed in much more accurately but it has better lighting and a much faster refresh rate. The third one hasn't even come out of the box yet, but it cost $32 including shipping, so how can you go wrong with that? Physically, it looks quite similar to the second one I have, which is the one I use. The super cheap one came to me from Hong Kong via this ebay seller. I suppose I should try it and find out if it works as well as the other one (which also came to me direct from Hong Kong). http://cgi.ebay.com/1-3MP-USB-digit...250672022178The following pictures are all taken directly from the screen, no fiddling with dots per inch. First, I held the microscope about 12" / 30cm away from the stamp. Next, I moved in to about 3" / 7cm. Then I used the two ranges the microscope will focus on if you touch it right against the stamp, 60x and 200x (I think that's what this one does, I don't even remember for sure). As you can see, 200x is almost always too high a power for looking at stuff. You can especially see that with photogravure stamps, all you get is a pile of dots. Ryan |

Thanks for the link Ryan and yes your microscope isn't to bad at all,the one advertised on the link is that something similar to the one you used on this thread,I've noticed that there is one that has a range from 10X to 200X (from the same seller) where as the one on the link is 25X to 200X the reason why I asked is I have just brought the 10X to 200X microscope off that link for $25.00 including shipping. No harm in having two and It's only $25.00 |

When I saw Ryan's post and the great pix his magnifier produces, I took a look in ebay for one. If you search for "magnifier" you get a lot of choices and a variety of prices. Yup, many are from China; but, if they work, what the heck.....and, if they don't work; you're not out that much on some of them. Just to put my money where my mouth is, I've ordered a 45x "microscope" with 2 LEDs and the price is less than $4. If I find it isn't powerful enough, I'm sure there are some collectors at our club who will easily pay me the $4, or more, for it. |

OK, SERIOUS QUESTION about the pictured microscopes... that ebay add microscope "1.3MP USB digital microscope 25X~200X Magnifier 8LED" did you open it and try it yet, the one direct from hongkong? reason I ask I think I'd love that to use with my grandfathers collection HOWEVER, my Father is completely paralyzed and has a hard time seeing the small print or even stamps but they still pay helper to come do stamps with him on occasion, he has a large computer screen which he can see, I'm wondering can you just put these stamps under the microscope and see the whole thing on screen or is it a complicated detailed process that would confuse my not so tech savvy parents. if this device is easy to use it could increase his stamp time and enjoyment of the process 100 fold so the more info you have the better! |
