An ideal thread for each of us to make a
right fool of ourselves, and have a bit of a giggle.

Anybody game enough to start with their guess ?
Only one guess allowed per person.
Winners prize? the option to add the nickname "fluke"
to their moniker.

I predict your source is going to attract some scrutiny, whatever it may be. (I'd ask, but then you'd suspect that I would run off to Google to try to find the answer.)

Assuming WW stands for World Wide, and you're not trying to sneak past us with some arcane abbreviation like Wagga Wagga, then I guess 22,457,363,850

1931 was a tough year, I would say 723.

Some interesting replies, Bravo for those
giving it a go. You are winners already by
taking the risk.

Stampgal would surely define the upper limit
I can see some educated reflection
in amongst the replies as well.

My Reference is the French Newspaper "L'Echangiste Universal"

I am only seeking "postage stamps"
but they give totals for....

Postage stamps
Service
Postage due
parcel post
franchise
express letter
newspaper
fiscal postal
and telegraph..

Of course the figure would be subject to debate,
but we shall use it at least as a basis for this comp.

Googlers..there is adverse karma for sneaking any peeps.

My guess would have been based on a middling country's
emmissions and multiplied by roughly the countrys
producing stamps, plus a few airmails for the new fledgling
service from remote locations.
Interesting to say the least.. you will be surprised.

Based on the extremely wide range of replies, I would suggest clarifying your thread title. Are we talking about different stamps officially issued (i.e., ignoring "collector-discovered" varieties), or are we talking about stamps printed/distributed in 1931?

This is getting interesting

I thought warrehouse was pulling my leg,
but New Guinea (according to Simplified Gibbons is 38)
I was very surprised.

I guess reading between the line of the brief report
they mean BASIC stamps issued by all countries of the world
in 1931, no varieties etc, probably what you would expect
to get as examples at the UPU

This is only a bit of fun, so don't blindfold me
up against a post and level the muskets if you don't
agree with the report from France 1931

Puzzler: some....
Telegraph=2
Fiscally Postal=2
Newspaper stamps=3

I don't know about 1931 - but I do know that in 1961 some 3,550 stamps were issued - according to my Stanley Gibbons World Simplified 1963 edition.
