Quote:
Perfin - (shortened form of "perforated initials" or "perforated insignia") a stamp with privately produced perforations through its face. The perforations are generally in the form of initials or a symbol that identify the owner of the stamp. Perfins are produced by businesses or organizations to discourage theft or misuse of their stamps. Perfins were first made in 1908, and were most popular through the 1950s.

OK, this I understand.

How to identify what does the perfin stands for, is there catalogs for that?

And does the perfin affect the stamp value? increase/decrease?

Thanks

There are catalogs out there - check with Subway stamps or look on ebay or othger auction websites for used copies.
Originally perfins were shunned as damaged stamps by collectors, but now they have been embraced by collectors and in many cases add to the value. From experience, it's really nice to find perfins on cover as it helps to identify the perfin type.

Wikipedia has additional links to collector organization just for perfins:

Perfin collecting is a niche area, Edwin
If you are a perfin collector, every puncture is a delight,
if you are not, they are met with

Perfin ID is an exact science, and to the true believers
an extra hole here or there, is of the utmost importance.

Here is a page from the Australian Perfin guide as
an example to what you may find, if you specialised
in this area.
Mantra: never throw anything out, or discard, there is a collector somewhere, that collects it.
I have a collection of glassine bags..how weird is that!

I pick up perfins when I can. So far I have been able to figure out every perfin I have come across by means of web search.

Hi All

I was wondering if Battlestamps could tell us how he finds the different perfin patterns? I have typed in something like Perfins + Belgium* (just for an example) and come up with minimal results, some better than others.

Is there a specific way to type in the information you are looking for on search engines such as Google" etc??

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Sorry for this odd posting.

In my last posting I asked Battlesyamps to suggest something but meant this to be addressed to 'smauggie'.

Every now and then, I botch things up :(

Cheers

Search on: Timbres Perfores de Belgique

Belgium
Hammink, Ruud J.; van der Hoorn, Jac M. 1997. Perfins van Belgie: Timbres Perfores de Belgique: The Perfins of Belgium. [in Dutch with English introduction] Tilburg, Netherlands: Perfins Club Nederland. [145 p.]

From this website: http://www.perfins.org/Publications.htm (it may be outdated so I don't know if any of those publications are still for sale)
Will <-- not smauggie, but hopefully helpful :)

Shorten your search words so their will cover more than one language;

belg* perf*

Click the Worldwide choice on the left side of the screen after you run the first search.
