I came across the below imprint on the back of a used 1/2 cent Franklin and am trying to determine what it is and what it might have been used for. Can anyone help me with this one?

I'd suggest a piece of HiJinx.
A scallywag has placed a genuine perfin
on the back of the stamp, and inked through the holes
with an art pen.
It has been done before.

Thanks, Rod222.

After consulting the source of all knowledge (Google), the only thing I could find on a "DeC/&D" perfin was on the Perfin Society's webpage.

Apparently, De Clermont & Donner used that perfin on the Queen Victoria "surcharge issue" from 1878 to 1937.

Yet why it was penned on the back of this stamp remains a mystery to me.

I must be losing my touch Tomisek,
I cannnot locate the other example of this trick.
Why do it? who knows.
I found a love note on the back of stamp a few years back.

Thanks for the perfin info.

Perfin stamps are often displayed (for sale?) face down on a black background. Perhaps someone looked up some random perfins and applied them to the backs of random (cheap) stamps for sale. Like Rod said . . . hijinx. (well, I am sure he said it in an Australian accent)

Actually Smauggie, that suggestion has merit,
When displaying perfins, it's difficult to
show front/back to enable the mount to hilight the puncture pattern.
You have something there.

Rod222,

Do I sense the impending proliferation of perfin-like imprints on the backs of cheap stamps?????

Maybe this could become a new topical area for interested collectors!

A Devilish thought Steve,
(and there's another thought...do we accord the Devil, a Capital "D")

One only has to reflect on the human condition,
to realise that this behaviour belongs to that
group of actions described as...
"It seemed a good idea at the time"

Look at the example, would you like that residing in your album ?

Philately is safe.....

Oops, I didn't mean to be unkind,
I have my "I love you Frank XXX" stamp
in my album, as a tickler,
and I would show your stamp willingly
as an interest piece,
What I meant was to have pages of penned
perfin images would be
