Is this an accepted normal period cancellation? I've never seen vertical bars like this so pronounced on a stamp and wonder if it is a normal cancel or if it might be a precancel or a local variation of one.

Since Ben was in the habit of flying a kite during a lightening storm, could the bars a Faraday Cage?

I browsed 500 or so of my own around that period,
nothing evident so short and stubby.
Most machine cancels are elongated, and or join a vertical
line.

wt1 : Probably what you have there are the killer bars from a Doremus machine cancel. The other type of machine cancel with vertical bars is the Barr-Fyke, but they are longer and really need to see the whole cancel to really tell. Doremus machine cancel below:

Bravo Battlestamps,
never came across a Doremus machine cancel before.
Fascinating.

Thanks for the info. I never came across that type of cancel before, either. While it may not be rare, it is certainly an interesting item above the run-of-the-mill cancels I typically see on stamps from that period.

Once again, there's rarely a question here that someone doesn't have a thorough and interesting answer...
