I have been looking at my US stamps, most 1940s/50s. I have noticed a few commemorating the statehood of different states. e.g. I have "Colorado,1876-1951 75th Anniversary of statehood". Does anyone collect these topically? I am interested in exploring this theme.

i think the last two are part of a new set? as both those states had stamps released in the 40's and 50's. |

Another way to explore US state stamps is the 50 state birds & flowers set(1981?), state flag set (1976?), Greetings From set (2000?). I think that is a great way to expand upon the various statehood stamps. |

Personally, I like the "Greetings From" issue. All 50 states depicted on one sheet: And the reverse has a bunch of data on each state (i.e. State Bird, Flower, Capital, etc.) which provides all the info. in one place. |

I like that sheet, a complete contrast to the older statehood stamps I have been looking at. Thanks for posting Is that the 2000 issue that Stamperdude mentioned? |

I don't think there was one issued in 2000. Date of Issue of the "Greeting From" stamp was 04/04/2002. Scott lists it as 3561-3610 (3610a for the entire sheet). |

I don't collect the US but some of those stamps above a really nice.
The big sheet is a form of "Greeting Stamps"? Why do they call them that? The Netherlands also has stamps like those, and UK has a similar type but I've never understood their reason for existing. |

It was a takeoff of the classic "Greetings From" postcards that were popular in the 1940's (I believe). It was kind of a "retro" thing, taking into account the classic look of those old postcards onto a set of present-day stamps. |

Just to update my previous post. The cards were popular in the 1950's (not the 1940's). Also, while not depicted on the "Greetings From" Stamps for each State, the postcards were popular for cities visited by vacationers. Here's an example of a postcard from Boston, Massachusetts (same general theme): In fact, if you search the internet for "Greetings from" cards, you'll come up with a whole array of these items, some of which can be custom-made today to your own specification. |

That stamp just gave me a Flashback to the National Lampoon's movies with Chevy Chase. Graphics were similar. Yes, I'm nuts.
The retro look is really nice. |

You're right! National Lampoon's Vacation depicted a similar style card in their opening/closing credits. |

The sheet was reissued with the denomination 37 cents. Does anyone know the reasoning behind doing this (other than the rate change). Both sheets are a little pricy. |

Thanks rohumpy, I never even connected with the fact that they re-issued the series in the new 37 cent denomination (Scott 3696a). I guess it must have been a popular stamp series, and worth re-issuing. Probably cheaper to print the change in denomination than develop a whole new stamp series. |
