Thanks Rod. This is a really interesting, well documented and busy period in European 20th century history. Not only that, the stamps are generally easily available and cheap (although forgeries abound). It would be interesting to see the map dated 1920 and 1921 to chart the decline and fall of the White Russians. Note British involvement!

Well written up, as yours is, stamps are great fun to put into full historical context. As you know, I'm a great fan of that.

Agreed, Tim.
That simple map clearly shows Deniken, Wrangel and Kolchak areas, and movements, I had no overall context prior, they were just names in a stamp catalogue. (Apart from BeeSee's maps)

I too was surprised to the amount of countries involved.

Civil War definition - "a war between citizens of the same country".

Yet so many 'civil wars' ended up with involvement from other countries.

Hi Rod,

Very nice to see the maps from The Penguin Atlas of World History.

I was really into maps when I was at school and I got so excited when I found Volume 1 for sale in my local bookshop.

I remember having to wait a very long time for the second volume to be published.

Nigel, I didn't even know there was a Volume 2! This was one of my most treasured non-fiction books as a child. I believe I still have it somewhere.

Thanks guys.

This cover seems to have come from "Triangle", a St Petersburg-based manufacturer of rubber products including boots:

There is a Russian Wikipedia article which gives quite an amazing history of over a hundred years of changing fortunes, including the Russian-American connection referred to on the cover and later becoming "Red Triangle" after the revolution.

Is there a way we can include a link here that includes Russian characters in the URL?
