That group created alot of stamps for getting around the strike. Many designs they had indicated that they were influenced by the collectors market. There are many others types during this period in Canada. |

The Juan De Fuca Despatch started actually in 1965 running service from Victoria, BC to & from Port Angeles, WA. They were first used during the threat of Mail Strike, then 1968 during the actual strike occured & use & issues increased. There were 2 issues in 1965, 20 in 1968, & 18 in 1970 all based on only 2 style types.
In 1974 they were renamed Juan De Fuca Despatch Carrier Service introducing a new format with 5 different sailboat stamps attached to a card total of 60 issues with 3 different values. The following year 55 new issues with the same 5 sailboats as the previous year, but now with the added use inscription, (Printed Matter .18; 1st Class,.25; Airmail, .28; Overseas Airmail, .41; Parcel Post, $1.00; & Registered, $1.25.
In 1976 the stamp design changed to tall ships still attached to a card a total of 25 stamps with 5 values.
In 1978 used the same design with new colors & 25 more stamps.
In 1980 & 81 they used the same card concept to hold 5 stamps, but now instead of 5 different there was just 1, issuing 8 values for 10 different issues. Later in 1981 the same issue was release with the added phrase "Royal Wedding" for another 5 issues.
In 1982 a new format was used with 4 stamps with no values, 4 ships around a map of Vancouver Island. Until this issue all stamps or stamps were printed as being Victoria to Port Angeles, on the tab of this issue show both directions.
In 1983 the flag issues were released with no tab attached, 16 issues with 4 values. The following year the same stamps with the 5 Olympics Rings added for additioned 16 issues & 4 values.
In 1985 they issued a block of 4 regiment seals 16 issues 4 different values, later an handstamp ovrprinted "1985 C.U.P.W. Postal Strike" in a rectangular box on all 16 issues.
The 1986 issue was the same view of the EXPO86 divided by 4 stamps leaving 16issues with 4 values.
The 1987 issues were of the 125th Anniversary of the city of Victoria with 4 different views of the capital building. These then were overprinted "1987 Canadian Postal Strike", then followed by a 2nd overprint "1987 Canadian Inside Workers Postal Strike" 1st in red ink the again in black.

During 1988 a set of 4 Olympics, 3 for Calgary & 1 for Seoul were issued total 16 issues with 4 different values. This was the first time that 2 stamps were inscribed as Port Angeles / Victoria implying service starting there, since service always was 2-way. Another strike occurred in August, so a handstamp "Aug - -1986 / Canadian / Postal Strike" resulting in 16 additional issues. The strike continued & an additional handstamp was applied to issues with the aforementioned overprint, "Sep - - 1988" creating 16 more issues.
In 1989 they issued a set of four showing copies of earlier Canadian PO issues a total of 16 issues with 4 values. No additional handstamped overprints.
Then in 1990 they issued a 25th Anniversary of their 1st issue similar to it, 8 issues with 4 values. This issue would have a 2 different handstamp overprints that were used in 1991, "Aug - - 1991 / Canadian / Postal Strike" the with an additional, "Sep - - 1991" a total of 16 issues with 4 values.
On September 27, 1991 the Juan De Fuca Despatch Carrier Service ceased operations. |
