@Fred As mentioned if you can let us know what scanner you have a tailor-made response will no doubt be heading your way. I have been meaning to write a guide of what I use which is: Epson scanner Picasa for image editing Dropbox for online backup - 2Gb free - Anyone let me know if interested as I can invite you for additional 250mb Flickr for image hosting. All are free (except scanner) |

Fred are you having an issue with upload size? if so are you using windows XP? I double click on the picture file, this loads "Microsoft office picture manager", then there is a button to compress picture to "web" size and click save. thats it I'm done |

Sometimes I'm lazy. I have been trying to "software" out of my problem. My scans are overall grey and hazy, and I get black "hairs" appearing on my scans?
I realise now that I have to bite the bullet, clean the "Underside" of my scanner glass
Anyone tried this on a Epson V200 photo? If so, can you itemise how you did it please?
Note: Doing this will probably void any warranty
------------------------------------------------ From the Google monster............
How do I remove the glass on my Epson V200 Scanner? Where do I find instructions, pictures and diagrams describing how to remove the glass from an Epson Perfection V200 flatbed scanner? I need to clean off the fog on the inside side of the glass that has been created by off-gassing from electronic components.
SOURCE: How do I clean the inside of the glass on the Epson 3490 Scanner?
Disconnect and remove the lid. Remove the two screws on the back of the base. Then use a screwdriver or flat blade to slightly open the back seam. Beginning at the back, run a blade up inside the upper part of the side seam. You will need to release three catches on each side. Once the sides are loose, raise the back of the top, while pushing forward, and the two snap catches at the front will release. The top then lifts off and you can clean the glass. Reassemble in reverse order.

Epson are notorious for getting a haze on the underside of the platen. It comes from the lubricant they use, if the scanner gets hot the lube vaporizes.
Taking a part your scanner is a bit tricky. Epson generally uses a 'snap together' type of clam shell design; this means you have to pry apart the top and bottom half's of the enclosure. I find one of the better tools to use is a couple of butter knives my wife has, they have a wide, flat, thin blade and slip under the parts pretty easily. The daunting part is keeping several of the snaps from re-engaging as you work your way around the perimeter of the enclosure.
I find having a nice single malt Scotch before starting also helps greatly. Don |

Cheers Don, Thanks for your support and encouragement. The last time I had alchohol of any kind, was around 1975. I'll have a cup of tea, and an Iced Vo Vo, instead, before the attempt. |

Well, that was painless Don, using your advice, off, cleaned and back working in 7 minutes.
Yellowish "fog" came off on the cloth similar to nicotine (I do not smoke) so presumed the result of the vapourised oil.

Interesting. We had a similar discussion just a couple of months ago on another board -- also an Epson. If I remember correctly, Don mentioned heat from prolonged use of the Epson would also cause the haze.
I've got an Epson for oversized documents (OK, OK, for large mint sheets), but I typically won't scan more than 10-20 at a time, so I haven't run into the "haze" problem yet. |

Now that I have "Postmaster GS" software "Stampfix" I am going gangbusters.
I have scanned over 500 stamps in the last few days.
I am doing say 30 -40 individual scans at each hit, on the 1 platen. Employing the carousel option in the Seiko software.
"Stampfix" then deskews and gets them ready for Catalogue numbering.
