I finally got to examine some of these wonderful stamps I got on ebay a few months ago. On one of the 20 centavos there appears to be an accent over the last A of Panama on the right side. Left side.................Right side Is this an actual constant variety or is it a defect in the overprint plate? None of the other overprints I have show it.

Hi BeeSee
It looks like an 'ink splatter' or 'blob' variety. Certainly different anyway.
Sorry I can't give you an estimated value

The funny thing is, there is SUPPOSED to be an accent on the last "A" of Panama, like all there stamps issued since the overprints! |

This is indeed a constant variety. Your stamp is of the Third Panama Issue of 1904, which consists of Colombia stamps overprinted. Varieties in this overprint are due to insufficient supplies of the same type letter and loose locking of the form allowing letters to shift and fall out.
This stamp was printed on a sheet of 100, the overprint used a 50-stamp form printed twice on each sheet. Thus, varieties exist in two instances of each sheet. One can use these variations to determine the plate position of the original stamp. I have studied these along with the Canal Zone overprint which was used on some stamps of this series, and it is a rewarding interest.
Your stamp is a variety of the 20-centavo stamp with an accented third A in the right Panama. It occurs two to four times in each arrangement (there are three arrangements of this overprint).Other constant varieties include substitution of V's for A's and spacing variations.
Let us see any other overprinted stamps of this era you might have. I might be able to spot some more varieties, having stared at these for hours.

Thanks for that information Dave. I see that some varieties are listed in Scott, but not the accent, at least in my 1965 (yes, 1965 ) Volume 1. I will post some more images later today. |
