I believe the label attached to this Belgium Scott 81 says something about No Sunday Delivery
What was the purpose for this ? There is nothing in Scott about
the meaning of the labels.

Hi lithograving, At the time there were postal deliveries every day and the label was to provide an option for people who felt that their letters shouldn't be delivered on Sundays (for Lord's Day Observance reasons). If you were happy for it be delivered on a Sunday you simply removed the label before sticking on the stamp.

Thanks for this info also Nigel.

I never would have guessed that it had anything to do with religion.

Was Belgium the only country where this occurred?

I remember the movie only because it was restricted but
I got to see it anyway.

I've read that it had more to do with a labor-union issue masquerading as a religious sensibility, though that is the kind of statement that could be the subject of some slanting from the author. If you are searching for information, a good word to include in your query is "dominical" which is a common name for the tabs.

It's interesting that the stamp does not have the name of the
country compared to later ones which were bilingual Belgie/Belgique.

Canada is also a bilingual (for now ) country but at least
CANADA is the same in French and English.

Thanks for the "dominical" suggestion Cjd. Found some info online.
Wow the power of computers. We are truly fortunate to have all
this information on hand at our fingertips. And it's free.

BeeSee, when the time comes for a plebiscite/referendum will either side be happy with a 50 per cent plus one vote or a clear majority?
I wonder if we're going to have another one here in Canada.
No I don't mean Quebec but out West.

Litho, there is not much talk of separation in BC at all, but in Alberta it may be different, but I don't think it is strong at all. I know a few years back there was an obscure party on Vancouver Island for the separation from BC, but heard nothing recently.

Hi Litho

It is also interesting to note that Belgium issued postal cards with definitive types that also had the same option. If you wanted that card delivered to your door on a Sunday, then all the sender had to do was scratch out the lower portion where the option was printed.

The one thing I am not sure on is whether the postman would bang on your door and ask the receiver and he would either scratch that out or leave it, or, the sender did that before sending??

Well they seem at lot friendlier this past September than they did in 1966...in Brussels back then if we spoke English or Dutch in restaurants or asking directions we were ignored..perhaps we were on the wrong side of town ??
