Some Belgian stamps feature a 'T" overprint: But sometimes overprints go terribly wrong. I am now the proud (?) owner of this monstrosity: I suppose they were influenced by the modernist painters when they did that. While on Belgian stamps, does anyone have a catalogue number and CV for this surcharged issue from 1936, which isn't listed in my Gibbons Simplified:

The top one is TX18, the bottom PO299, per "Catalogue Offical de Timbres-poste Belgique", 1993.
Found nothing on the middle stamp. |

Thanks, warrehouse!
I do think the second stamp deserves to catalogued, though, don't you? |

Hi jimjamtwo,
The middle stamp is catalogued by SG with the surcharge as SG 579 from 1931.
However, SG doesn't list separately your version with the 1936 precancel. SG only lists Belgian precancels when the precancel includes a surcharge (not as in the case where the precancel happens to be on a surcharged stamp).

nigelc, I'm confused. The middle stamp is not 1931 - it's much later. I think this is a '50s issue.
The one at the bottom, from 1936, does have a surcharge - so therefore should be listed by SG!
Can you pls check again?
Thanks for looking! |

I'm sure Nigel meant to say the bottom one (not the middle one). The bottom (3rd) stamp is SG 579. |

Quote: But sometimes overprints go terribly wrong. I am now the proud (?) owner of this monstrosity: I've recently found the joy of hunting for overprint irregularities. They seem to be surprisingly accessible, even in cheaper lots. Hope you find many more 'monstrosities' Jimjam. By the way, I believe the 'T' means 'postage due', as mentioned on the site below. http://www.shoeboxstamps.com/stampid.htm#t |

Well, it is of interest as the worst executed overprint I've ever seen!

Thanks for looking! Sorry of any confusion caused! As 22crows said I meant the bottom stamp so let me try again: "The bottom stamp is catalogued by SG with the surcharge as SG 579 from 1931. However, SG doesn't list separately your version with the 1936 precancel. SG only lists Belgian precancels when the precancel includes a surcharge (not as in the case where the precancel happens to be on a surcharged stamp)." |

Peterethio beat me to the punch and, yes, they are overprints for postage due usage (the top 2)
Many of the Belgian definitive types were overprinted with the "T" and it is a challenge to get as many types as you can for a specialized collection.
Oddly enough, I cannot find the 1936 "Precancel" style in the Scott catalogue whereas some of the other years are mentioned.

It's the same with my SG Simplified, Bujutsu. There seems no obvious reason why - after all, this 1936 example is an identical kind of stamp to that from 1931, which is listed. |

It is strange jimjamtwo
If these stamps were available for the regular mail systems in the past, it is odd that the mainstream catalogues do not list them.
I think that the catalogue publishers need to do a lot of homework <G>
